Stryiskyi Park is Lviv's best-known park and a listed monument of landscape architecture. Work on it began in 1879 to a design by city gardener Arnold Röhring, on the site of a cemetery closed in 1823; the park was formally opened in 1894 for the Regional Exhibition. It covers more than 52 hectares and is laid out on three levels: the lower parterre with a pond, wooded slopes and an upper terrace. Over 200 species of trees and shrubs grow here, including ginkgo and Japanese maple. Highlights: the swan pond with the 'Lileia' sculpture, a greenhouse and rock garden, the decorative 'ruins' of 1894, the Jan Kiliński monument (1895), the 'Ivasyk-Telesyk' musical fountain, a Children's Railway station and a skatepark (2008). Entry is free, the park is unfenced and open around the clock; dogs are walked here on a leash.
