The Black House at Rynok Square 4 is one of Lviv's most recognisable Renaissance townhouses (late 16th century, with its dark rusticated stone facade). It now houses the Museum of the History of Lviv, a department of the Lviv Historical Museum. The exhibition occupies nine halls on three floors and covers nearly 800 years of the city's past: a model of princely Lviv, Magdeburg self-government, craft guilds and trade, sacred spaces, education, art and sport. The ground floor and the courtyard hold the Lapidarium, some 50 pieces of stone carving from old Lviv buildings dating from the 13th to the 20th century. It stands next to the Korniakt Palace (Rynok 6) and Palazzo Bandinelli (Rynok 2), so all three museum departments can be seen in one walk.
