The Gunpowder Tower (1554-1556) at 4 Pidvalna St. is the only surviving tower of Lviv's medieval defensive walls, with walls up to 3 m thick and original loopholes. For years it served as a gunpowder store and later as the House of Architects of the Lviv branch of the Architects' Union. Since 2018 it has operated as the "Gunpowder Tower" Centre for Architecture, Design and Urbanism: exhibition halls, a cafe and a multimedia scale model of central Lviv with video mapping. The interior is open when an exhibition or event is running (often free or by donation). Two 19th-century marble lions guard the entrance.
