Castle Hill (413 m above sea level) is the highest point in Lviv and the city's main free viewpoint. Of Prince Lev's castle and the later 14th-century stone fortress only fragments of the southern wall remain - the rest was dismantled in 1868-1869 to raise the Union of Lublin Mound, now topped by a 360-degree observation platform. The High Castle park opened in 1835; the climb from Kryvonosa St. takes 20-30 minutes along paths and wooden stairs. The hill adjoins the Znesinnia Regional Landscape Park, a natural extension of the walk with forest trails, ponds and views over eastern Lviv. Entry is free and the paths are lit at night.
