Sambir is a compact former princely town about 75 km from Lviv, ideal for a half-day or day trip. Its centre is Rynok Square with the 17th-century town hall (founded 1668, rebuilt in 1844), whose clock tower has a viewing platform accessible by arrangement. Next to it stands the church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist (1530), the town's oldest and tallest building, retaining Gothic details. Sambir's chief relic — the remains of St. Valentine, patron of lovers — is kept, contrary to a common mix-up, not in the Roman Catholic church but in the Greek Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God (1738), which also holds the venerated Sambir icon of the Virgin. Also worth a visit are the 'Boikivshchyna' museum and the historic town park on Shashkevycha St. Getting there: bus or minibus from Lviv in 1 h 15 min – 1 h 45 min, or a suburban train (1.5–2 hours).
About 75 km. Buses and minibuses run daily from Lviv (1 h 15 min – 1 h 45 min); suburban trains take roughly 1.5–2 hours. By car it is about 1 h 20 min.
Half a day, roughly 3–5 hours, is enough for Rynok Square, the town hall tower, both main churches, the museum and the park.
In the Greek Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God (1738), not in the Roman Catholic church of St. John the Baptist as is often claimed. Entry to the church is free.
