St. George's Archcathedral is Lviv's principal Greek Catholic church and the seat of the UGCC, built in 1744–1762 to a design by Bernard Meretyn and completed by Clemens Xaver Fesinger. It is the finest example of Lviv Baroque-Rococo: the hilltop ensemble comprises the cathedral, a bell tower, the Metropolitan's Palace and its walls. Above the portal stands the sculptural group of St. George slaying the dragon; inside are paintings by Luka Dolynsky and the venerated icon of the Mother of God of Terebovlia. The crypt holds the tombs of UGCC primates, including Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky and Patriarch Josyf Slipyj. The bell tower carries 'Dmytro', the oldest bell in Ukraine (1341). The cathedral is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Ensemble of the Historic Centre of Lviv'. Entry is free (donations welcome). The Metropolitan Gardens next door are a separate site worth a walk.
