The Solomiya Krushelnytska Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is the city's main stage and its architectural calling card at 28 Svobody Avenue. Built in 1897-1900 to a Neo-Renaissance design by Zygmunt Gorgolewski, it opened on 4 October 1900 with Wladyslaw Zelenski's opera 'Janek'. The theatre stands over the Poltva river, hidden in a culvert, and is crowned with bronze figures of Glory, Genius of Drama and Music. Inside are the Mirror Hall, a grand staircase and Henryk Siemiradzki's 'Parnassus' curtain. Today it stages opera, ballet and symphonic programmes, and the building can also be seen on a daytime guided tour.
