Autumn is the smartest time for a holiday: in September and early October the sea is still warm, prices are already lower and the crowds have gone. From Lviv the velvet season is closer than it seems — a ground trip to a Polish airport plus a low-cost flight puts you on the Mediterranean.
Where the warmth is: Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete), Spain (Barcelona, Alicante) and Italy (Rome, Bari) — all direct Ryanair and Wizz Air routes from Krakow and Warsaw. Closer to November the sea steps back and city breaks take over: Budapest with its thermal baths, Prague, Vienna.
Plenty works without a flight too: September Krakow without the summer queues, Budapest by night train, Vienna for a long weekend. And within Ukraine autumn means the Carpathians — dry, warm and golden right through October.
