From within Ukraine the train is the simplest way to Lviv: the main station on Dvirtseva Square takes services from Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and the whole west of the country, and trams 1 and 9 run from it straight to Rynok Square in 15 minutes. From Kyiv it is 5–6 hours on the daytime Intercity+, or an overnight train arriving in the morning.
The bus wins where the train is awkward or sold out: direct services run from Kyiv, Odesa, Lutsk, Rivne, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk, many of them overnight. In Lviv they arrive at the railway station or the main bus station; the exact stop is always on your ticket.
From abroad the journey usually has two legs. The shortest entry is Przemyśl: European PKP trains reach it from Krakow, Warsaw and beyond, and from there Lviv is 2–3 hours away. Direct buses run from Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Berlin. There are no flights into Lviv airport at the moment, so people fly to Krakow, Rzeszów or Warsaw and continue by train or bus.

Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport can enter the EU visa-free for up to 90 days within 180. A valid biometric passport is enough.
It depends on the day and crossing load: trains are usually faster and more predictable, buses can take from one to several hours. Leave a buffer for tight connections.
