Holiday tickets
sell out well before the date
The way to Lviv over the holidays is the same as at any other time: a train, a bus, or a flight to a Polish airport with an overland leg. What changes is demand, not the route. Seats for the Christmas and New Year dates go long before the trip itself, and the closer to the holidays, the less choice remains in departure time and carriage class — not only in price.
From within Ukraine the train is the most dependable option: 5–6 hours from Kyiv on the daytime Intercity+ or an overnight service arriving in the morning, and mostly overnight trains from Odesa and Kharkiv. The station is on Dvirtseva Square, and trams 1 and 9 reach Rynok Square in 15 minutes — that is, the Christmas market itself. The bus helps where the train is already sold out: direct services run from Kyiv, Odesa, Lutsk, Rivne, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk.
From abroad the journey has two legs. The shortest entry is Przemyśl: PKP trains reach it from Krakow and Warsaw, and Lviv is 2–3 hours further on. Direct buses run from Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Berlin. There are no flights into Lviv airport at the moment, so people fly to Krakow, Rzeszów or Warsaw and continue overland — for holiday dates that overland leg is worth booking together with the flight rather than after it.
A word on arriving at night. Ukraine is under martial law, and a curfew comes with it: whether it is eased for New Year's night, and within what limits, is decided and announced by the regional authorities each time. If your train or bus arrives overnight, arrange check-in in advance and check the rules in force before you travel.

It depends on the day and crossing load: trains are usually faster and more predictable, buses can take from one to several hours. Leave a buffer for tight connections.
