Vysokyi Zamok (High Castle) is the park on Castle Hill, the highest point of Lviv and the city's main viewpoint. A stone castle first mentioned in 1256 once stood here; only a fragment of wall survives. Afforestation of the bare hill began in 1835 and produced a park of about 36 hectares. Its summit is the man-made Union of Lublin Mound, 413 m above sea level, offering a 360-degree panorama of Lviv. The park still has the gardener's house (1868) and an artificial grotto with stone lions (1841); the viewing platform dates from 1967. The 192-metre television tower nearby has stood since 1957. More than 50 species of trees, shrubs and vines grow here. The climb is steep, with stairs and winding paths; the main entrance is from Kryvonosa Street, another from Zamkova Street. Entry is free at any time of day.
