The Lviv House of Scientists at 6 Lystopadovoho Chynu St. is the city's finest example of Neo-Baroque architecture. It was built in 1897–1898 to a design by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer (the authors of the Odesa Opera House) for a club of horse-stud owners. From 1918 to 1939 it housed the National (noble) Casino, popularly known as 'Gerhard's casino', and was among the first buildings in Lviv lit by electricity. Since 1948 it has been the House of Scientists. Its opulent interiors — the mirrored ballroom, red, silver, white and theatre halls — retain original stucco, wooden panelling and a spiral staircase. Today it hosts chamber concerts, conferences, presentations, exhibitions, guided tours, balls and photo shoots, and is a favourite film location.
