The Hnat Khotkevych City Palace of Culture at 1 Kushevycha St. is one of Lviv's oldest cultural centres. It grew out of a 1924 workers' protest: for over a decade employees contributed 1% of their wages, raising 50,000 zloty. Designed by architects Tadeusz Wróbel and Leopold Karasiński, it was begun in 1933 and opened in November 1934; it has borne Hnat Khotkevych's name since 1993. The main hall seats 597 (400 in the stalls, 197 on the balcony); there is also a chamber stage and conference rooms across more than 4,100 m². Over 20 resident ensembles work here, and the palace hosts concerts, theatre, film screenings, lectures and workshops.
