Ivan Franko Park is the oldest park in Lviv, right in front of the main building of Ivan Franko National University. It grew out of a late-16th-century garden of Jan Scholz-Wolfowicz; from 1614 until the late 18th century it belonged to the Jesuits and was known as the Jesuit Garden, before Emperor Joseph II handed it over to the city. In 1855 it was redesigned as an English landscape park, the layout it still has today. The park covers about 10.5 hectares. Its landmark is the rotunda of 1835 (listed separately on our site), and a cast-iron urn of 1829 with the relief 'The Flow of Human Life' also survives. The monument to Ivan Franko, whose name the park has carried since 1950, was unveiled in 1964. Trees planted between 1855 and 1890 include oak, linden, ash, ginkgo biloba and Japanese pagoda tree. There are children's playgrounds and shady alleys; entry is free.
