Pidhirtsi Castle is a late-Renaissance and Baroque palace-residence built in 1635-1640 for Crown Hetman Stanislaw Koniecpolski and now a branch of the Lviv National Art Gallery. The building was badly damaged by a fire in 1956 and housed a Soviet tuberculosis sanatorium for decades, so almost none of the original interiors survive. Restoration continues in stages as funding allows, but the castle is open to paying visitors: the courtyard, the cellars and several halls, including the Mirror and Knights' halls, can be seen along with an exhibition on the palace's history. A terraced Italian Baroque park surrounds it, and the Baroque church of the Exaltation and St Joseph (1752-1766) stands at the end of the tree-lined avenue.
