Stare Selo Castle is the largest fortress in Lviv region by area, covering roughly 2 hectares, about 25 km from Lviv. Wooden defences are recorded from 1448, and the Renaissance stone castle was built in 1642-1654 under Prince Wladyslaw Dominik Zaslawski-Ostrogski. It withstood a siege by Khmelnytskyi's forces in 1648 and a Turkish attack in 1672. Today it is a ruin: three of the original six towers survive, along with stretches of wall 14-16 metres high with decorative arcading and Baroque stone carving on the eastern tower. The site is neglected and its condition is critical, with decay accelerated by vibration from the railway running right beside it. In 2023 a court cancelled a private concession and returned the monument to state ownership. It is not a museum: there is no ticket office, no opening hours and no guided tours, only free exterior viewing, and even that calls for caution near the unstable walls.

Critical. Three of the six original towers survive, and the 14-16 metre walls are collapsing, a process accelerated by weather and vibration from the adjacent railway. The state regained ownership in 2023.
About 25 km southeast of Lviv, a 30-40 minute drive; regional buses also serve the village.
