Free Wings (Vilni Kryla) is a rehabilitation centre for wild birds in the village of Kozhychi, about 12 km from Lviv (1 Radisna St). It is not a zoo or an attraction: injured, disabled and confiscated birds are brought here — storks, owls, raptors, waterfowl and exotics. Those that recover are released back into the wild; birds that can no longer fly stay for good. The centre was founded and is run by ornithologist Viktor Shelvinskyi, who has cared for the birds on a voluntary basis for more than 18 years; media reports count several hundred birds of dozens of species, including Red Book species. The grounds — enclosures, flight aviaries and ponds — can be visited, but only by prior arrangement, and the centre survives on donations. Visitors do not touch or feed the birds without the keeper's permission.
There is no ticket price — the centre lives on donations, and a visit is free or by donation. Any support (money, feed) is welcome, as monthly upkeep runs to around 10,000 UAH.
There are no fixed opening hours. Arrange a visit in advance by phone (+38 067 948 45 51) or through the centre's Facebook page.
No. These are birds in rehabilitation, many of them destined for release back into the wild; visits are accompanied by the keeper and contact with the birds is not allowed.
