The Bernardine Monastery on Soborna Square is a fortified complex whose heart is St Andrew's Church, built in 1600-1630 on the site of earlier wooden buildings. Paolo Romanus designed the lower Renaissance facade, Ambrosius Prychylny led the work in 1613-1617 and added the ornate gable, and Andreas Bemer completed the upper part by 1630. The style is Italian-Dutch Mannerism; the three-nave basilica is about 57.5 m long and 22 m high, built of cut stone. Inside are 17 wooden altars from the 1730s-1740s, frescoes by Benedikt Mazurkiewicz (1738-1740) and an 18th-century organ with 1,700 pipes and 32 stops. The courtyard holds a well of 1620 and the column of St John of Dukla (rebuilt in 1736). Since 1991 the church has belonged to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and is served by Basilian monks; the monastery buildings house the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv.
