Garrison Church of Sts Peter and Paul

The Garrison Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the former Jesuit church, was founded on 31 July 1610 and consecrated in 1630; Giacomo Briano directed the work in 1618-1621. It is a Baroque three-nave basilica (41 x 22.5 x 26 m) with galleries, a facade of pilasters and statues of saints, restored 18th-century frescoes by the Czech painter Franz Eckstein (restoration completed in November 2021) and an 18th-century organ with 22 stops. Used as a book depository in Soviet times, it returned to worship on 6 December 2011 and is now the main church of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic military chaplaincy. Beneath it lie the crypts and undergrounds with burials and archaeological finds, now a museum exhibition (models of 13th-18th century Lviv, remains of a 15th-century town school, a sarcophagus) - a separately ticketed attraction entered from Svobody Avenue.
