The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Latin Cathedral) is Lviv's main Roman Catholic church, on Katedralna Square. Construction began in the 1380s under Casimir III and was completed around 1493; the 1760-1778 rebuilding added a Baroque interior, while the 1892-1899 restoration introduced Neo-Gothic details. It is a Gothic three-nave basilica with a tower of about 66 m. Inside are the 1776 high altar with marble columns and figures of the four Doctors of the Church, stained glass by the Munich Mayer workshop (1892-1899), the Renaissance Kampian Chapel (1584-1629) with marble reliefs, and an 1839 organ. The cathedral is active, with daily Masses in Polish, Ukrainian, Latin and English; Pope John Paul II visited in 2001. Entry is free, but sightseeing is not allowed during Mass or 30 minutes before it starts.
