The Monastery of St. Onuphrius in the village of Lavriv (Sambir district) is one of the oldest in Ukraine: its foundation is dated to the mid-13th century, and tradition links it with Prince Lev Danylovych, said - though not archaeologically confirmed - to be buried here. Its treasure is the Church of St. Onuphrius with frescoes uncovered in 1911 beneath 19th-century overpainting, among the oldest wall paintings in western Ukraine. The monastery also keeps relics of St. Onuphrius, returned in 2011, and a collection of 15th-18th century icons. Closed under Soviet rule, the church was returned to worshippers in 1990 and the monastery restored in 1994; it is again an active Basilian (UGCC) house. There are no tourist opening hours: the church is open for services, and a look at the frescoes is arranged with the monks on the spot or by phone.
