Pharmacy Museum "Under the Black Eagle"

The Under the Black Eagle Pharmacy-Museum, on the corner of Drukarska and Stavropihiyska streets, is the oldest working pharmacy in Lviv and a museum at the same time: prescriptions are still dispensed at the counter, while 16 rooms covering some 700 m² hold over 3,000 exhibits. The business traces back to 1774, when military pharmacist Franz Wilhelm Natorph bought the building; the present house was built in 1775 to a design by Petro Poleyovskyi, and the museum opened here in 1966. Inside you'll find the trading hall with antique scales and cash register, a materials room, a laboratory of historic drug-making equipment, a reconstructed alchemist's lab, a library of more than 3,000 volumes, and cellars with barrels once used for medicinal wines. The ceiling carries an early-19th-century polychrome painting by the Viennese artist Stahl depicting the four elements. The house speciality is 'iron wine'.
