Underground Lviv Tour

The Underground Lviv tour is a two-hour walk through the multi-level catacombs of the medieval city. The standard route covers five sites: the cellars of the Jesuit church with 14th-century princely walls, the Dominican monastery, the Pharmacy Museum, the museum beneath the Town Hall, and the crypts of the Transfiguration Church. The best known are the cellars under the Jesuit church (11 Teatralna St), where you can see surviving fragments of Lviv's 14th-15th century defensive walls, frescoes and the sarcophagus of Archbishop Mykola Vyzhytskyi — and where, legend says, the ghost of the Black Monk still wanders. The cellars of the Dominican cathedral (1 Muzeina Sq) date back to the 13th-century palace of Prince Lev and are reached through the Museum of the History of Religion. Beneath the Pharmacy Museum (2 Drukarska St) lies a labyrinth once used to store medicinal herbs and wine. This is not a single venue with its own ticket desk but a guided service: group and private tours are run by Lviv travel agencies. It is cool and damp underground, so wear comfortable shoes.
