Lviv's main square, laid out in the late 13th century under Prince Lev Danylovych. A 142×129 m rectangle with the City Hall (built 1827-1835 in Classicist style) at its centre and 44 townhouses (nos. 1-45) around it, spanning Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Modernist styles - the Black House (1588-1589), the Kornyakt Palace (1580), the Lubomirski Palace (1760). Four early-19th-century fountains with statues of Neptune, Amphitrite, Diana and Adonis stand at the corners. The square is the heart of the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and hosts fairs, festivals and city celebrations. Open around the clock, free of charge; trams still cross the square.
