Lviv is the undisputed coffee capital of Ukraine. The city's love affair with coffee dates back centuries, and today you'll find everything from historic coffee houses to specialty roasters. Whether you prefer a classic coffee brewed on sand or a single-origin filter, Lviv has something for every coffee lover.

1. Svit Kavy (Coffee World)

Address: Katedralna Square, 6 · Hours: Mon–Sun 08:00–22:30

Svit Kavy is Lviv's best-known coffee house and the city's specialty-coffee pioneer, opened in 2000 as a tiny shop with four tables and now filling three floors of an old church house beside the Latin Cathedral. The beans are bought directly from farms and, since 2012, roasted at the company's own roastery on Kulparkivska St, 59.

What to order: a filter or espresso from a seasonal lot with a house-made pastry. Prices (official menu): coffee 110–150 UAH, pastries and desserts 130–180 UAH.

2. Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture (Kopalnia Kavy)

Address: Rynok Square, 10 · Hours: Mon–Thu 08:00–22:30, Fri–Sun 08:00–23:00

Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture is a coffee house with its own roastery in the Lubomirski Palace. It is really three spaces with three menus: the courtyard, where Lviv-style coffee is brewed in a cezve; the coffee house with the house "Prosvita" blend; and the "coffee mine" in the cellar.

What to order: the signature "sealed" coffee, finished with a caramel crust at your table.

3. Virmenka

Address: Virmenska St, 19 · Hours: Mon–Sun 10:00–22:00

Virmenka has been open on Armenian Street since 1979. Coffee is brewed in a copper cezve on hot sand — which earned it the title of Lviv's best café three years running (2016–2018) at the Lviv Coffee Festival. It keeps the "suspended coffee" tradition and a book-crossing shelf, and prices are modest.

What to order: coffee brewed on sand.

4. Chehovych Roastery

A specialty roaster with its own café, a little outside the centre — listed among Lviv's third-wave coffee spots by the city's tourist office.

A local specialty-coffee chain with several locations in the city, also on the tourist office's list of third-wave cafés.

6. Lviv Handmade Chocolate

The flagship shop-café of Lviv Handmade Chocolate. Downstairs is a shop and a working chocolate kitchen — you can watch pralines being moulded and decorated behind glass; upstairs is the café with hot chocolate, coffee and desserts. Expect queues at weekends.

7. Dzyga Art Center

Address: Virmenska St, 35 · Hours: Mon–Wed 12:00–22:00, Thu–Fri 12:00–23:00, Sat–Sun 10:00–23:00

Part gallery, part cafe, part cultural hub — Dzyga has been at the centre of Lviv's creative scene since 1993. Entry to the gallery is free; it hosts jazz and electronic concerts, literary readings and film screenings (some ticketed).

8. Kryivka

Address: Rynok Square, 14 · Hours: Mon–Fri 11:00–22:30, Sat–Sun 10:00–22:30

Famous for its UPA-themed concept (you need the password «Слава Україні!» — Glory to Ukraine — to get in), Kryivka is more restaurant than cafe. It is hidden in a cellar recreating an insurgent hideout, and dishes come in metal tableware.

9. Tsukernia (Confectionery)

Address: Staroyevreyska St, 3

A patisserie-café in the old town where coffee plays a supporting role to the baking: strudels, plyatsky (layered cakes) and Lviv syrnyk.

Best time to visit: Weekday mornings are ideal for avoiding crowds, especially at Rynok Square locations. Weekend afternoons are the busiest.
